The satin or long-and-short stitch is a flat-stitch variant and is part of a series of traditional Italian embroidery stitches. Different colors of yarns are used for the satin stitch, whose various lengths are arranged irregularly to ensure that the play of tone-on-tone color creates particular chromatic transitions. This stitch is so named because the dense stitches of silky polychrome yarns cover the background fabric entirely, creating a glossy effect similar to that of painted satin.
