In 1896, Raphael Bordallo Pinheiro registered the patent of his ceramic swallows, probably when realized that they could become a true Portuguese symbol. He was not mistaken, the artist’s flock of swallows began inhabiting the Portuguese homes, in the country as well as abroad.
